In collaboration with Northwestern Michigan College, SchaferHaus and NMC Magazine, Neue School Press hosted its first workshop. We explored the concept “artifact”, by examining the NMC Magazine on its 33rd anniversary in print, through a critical analysis of its production. In this 3-day intensive, publishing was relocated to Neue School Press. We offered a crash course in handset type and while working within the constraints of archaic equipment, we as designers, reclaimed a level of control in the production process. Our aim was to investigate ways to reduce waste, carbon footprint, consider “end of use” and really ask the question “What are we leaving behind?”. We printed the cover as well as a supplement to volume 33 issue 1 of NMC magazine, though the focus was on questioning design and production methods.
